** A Guide to Daisy Chain Fields Music Festival **
Daisy chains are a symbol of connection and creativity. These are two aspects that are at the stem of Olivia Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields Music Festival. This event takes place on August 29 at Great Park in Irvine, CA. Through the speakers at the festival will ring the voices of only female artists who were all chosen by Rodrigo herself. The net proceeds from this event will be donated to 10 nonprofit organizations that assist women’s needs. Some of Daisy Chain Fields’ partners are the organizations Freefrom, Baby2baby, and Planned Parenthood. ** The Lineup **
Bikini Kill
Aggressive feminist lyrics accompanied by abrasive guitar and drums combined with a DIY ethos are the ingredients to the music of Bikini Kill. Started by Kathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail, Kathi Wilcox, and Billy Karren, Bikini Kill is a feminist punk band that pioneered the Riot Grrrrl movement. Before Bikini Kill was the name of their band, it was the name of their feminist zine. They decided to transform their political message into a musical form during the early ‘90s.
Bikini Kill’s mission was to empower female voices and the band achieved this by inviting female fans to the front of the stage during their concerts. Hanna also utilized Bikini Kill to spread awareness about abuse and sexual assault all with a hardcore punk attitude.
Not For Radio
Perhaps no one noticed, but Not For Radio is the solo project of Maria Zardoya, the lead singer of the indie band The Marias. After releasing two albums with The Marias, Zardoya thought to prioritize her own musical wishes. She decided to create songs without the help of Josh Conway, her band-mate and ex-boyfriend. Not For Radio became a creative outlet for Zardoya to be completely honest about her emotions while discovering her independent musical identity.
Zardoya’s debut album Melt flows with devastatingly romantic lyrics that remind the listener of The Marias’ songs while still holding a unique element. Similar to the beautiful intensity of snow storms in winter, when Melt was written, Zardoya uncovers the gentleness and reflection that can derive from a broken relationship in her music.
Mitski
Growing up Mitski lived in a variety of countries, likewise to her nomadic upbringing, Mitski incorporates a variety of genres into her songs. Indie, folk, rock, art pop, alternative are just a few of the genres that Mitski surrounds her deeply emotional lyrics with.
Fans have connected with songs off of all eight of Mitski’s albums due to their raw lyrics that explore the feelings that accompany loneliness, rejection, societal pressures, and the experience of a Japanese American woman.
Santigold
Just like the color gold, Santigold’s music is a bold statement. Santigold is known for going beyond the limits of typical genres by combining punk, electronic, reggae, hip-hop, and pop together. Her integration of a punk flair in her songs originated from her early music days when she fronted the punk band Stiffed.
Santigold has carried the theme of catchy melodies through all five of her albums, but she has added a more political aspect to her later works. The lyrics in her latest album, Spirituals, describe her experiences with racial equity, systemic issues, and determination.
** What to bring **
To prepare for the heat bring…
- An empty, reusable water bottle, hydration packs, and plastic or aluminum water bottles
- A personal misting fan that is under 1.5 L and empty upon entering
- Sunscreen that is at most 3.4 oz and is not aerosol

- Blankets, sheets, and towels
- Only basic point and shoot consumer grade cameras without any accessories
- Portable battery packs
- Hand sanitizer that is less than 3.4 oz
- Factory sealed personal snacks
What bags you can bring…
- Small purses and fanny packs that are not clear (6” x 9”)
- Bags that are larger than 6” x 9” must be clear and under 12” x 6” x 12”
- All bags will be searched upon entry
** Transportation **
Parking
- Parking passes for the Great Park parking lot are available for purchase in advance.
- The parking lot opens at 8:30 am and no cars are allowed in after 8 pm.
- Vehicles are not allowed to reenter the lot after leaving.
- All passengers in the car must be wearing a festival wristband.
Shuttles
- Shuttle tickets are available to purchase in advance.
- The shuttles pick up from UC Irvine and OCVIBE (Honda Center).
- It is recommended to take the shuttle because they have designated fast routes.
- Parking spots are available at each shuttle pick-up location.
** Art Installations **
Sprinkled throughout the festival grounds will be eight displays of art, all of which are created by female artists. The artists featured are Yoko Ono, Ariel Zana, Kelsey Merreck Wagner, Kelly Wall, Rachel Hayes, Jordan Craig, Guerrilla Girls, and Jenny Holzer.
“To Daisy, My Girl” – Jordan Craig
This Saturday Jordan Craig is bringing a piece of her Northern Cheyenne heritage to the OC through her site specific artwork. Craig’s installation is a tribute to the Cheyenne beaded bag technique. In this piece she wove together pink and yellow beads to create a rhythmic appearance of blossoming daisies. The name and representation of daisies is in reference to the name of her deceased dog. Most of her artwork takes into consideration the relationship between modern art and the history of Indigenous culture.
“IN A DREAM…” – Jenny Holzer
Many people say that actions speak louder than words, this doesn’t ring true for Jenny Holzer whose artwork focuses on the power of words. She projects words of reflection, grief, inspiration, and knowledge. The purpose of Holzer’s text filled artwork is to dive deeper into contemporary life and question it. Her piece at Daisy Chain Fields is meant to invigorate conversations, excite people, and utilize kindness to defeat violence.
** What to wear **
