Can you believe today is the 40 year anniversary for LIVE AID!?!??!?! July 13th, 1985!
The event featured concerts at Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, and was watched by an estimated 1.5 billion viewers worldwide. Over 70 artists performed, and the event raised over $245 million for famine relief. Incredible, right?
Performers included Queen, David Bowie, Elton John, U2, The Who, Mick Jagger, Sting, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Black Sabbath, Bob Dylan, Phil Collins, Madonna, and many others.
Gary Calamar is going to pay tribute to LIVE AID during his show the Open Road later today (he's on from 4-6pm every Sunday). And then all next week, we'll dive into "LIVE AID (Live, 13th July 1985)" and re-live some of these great live performances as part of our 88-5 ALBUM DIVE just after 12p PT on the SoCal Sound.
