Dr. Sheila Steinberg is a Full Professor of Geography and Environmental Studies and Director of the Institute for Sustainability at CSUN, where she advances interdisciplinary collaboration and expands sustainability to center local strengths and strengthen connections between campus and community—highlighting the San Fernando Valley and CSUN as a powerful regional force.

Dr.Steinberg advocates for local voices to be heard and works to document and empower communities through research. Her scholarship focuses on sustainability, culture and community engagement, research methods, GIS,ethnicity, and policy—an outlook shaped by growing up with a South Indian Hindu father and a Southern Baptist mother from Kentucky, living across the United States, and serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala. She is co-editor of Climate, Vulnerability and Health (Springer, 2025), editor of Resilient Communities Across Geographies (Esri Press, 2021), and co-author of GIS Research Methods (2015), and has served as a guest editor for the University of Michigan’s Spark Magazine on extreme weather. She previously held leadership roles at CalPoly Humboldt and UMass Global, where she also served as Faculty President and engaged in radio and podcast outreach.
