The Afghan Whigs joined Matt Pinfield for another Pinfield Sessions at The SoCal Sound, featuring live performances of “Duvateen,” “House of I,” and “Catch A Colt,” along with a wide-ranging interview with Greg Dulli and John Curley.

The conversation opens with a deeply personal memory between Matt and Greg, recalling the day they learned of Kurt Cobain’s passing while The Afghan Whigs were in New Jersey promoting Gentlemen. From there, the interview moves through the band’s early years, their long history with Sub Pop, and the musical influences that helped shape their unmistakable sound.

Greg and John also discuss the band’s multi-generational audience, the trust they have built with fans over the years, and the feeling of pulling songs from across a deep catalog every night on stage. As Greg puts it in the interview, Dulli reflected on the band’s cross-generational audience, noting that at a recent show “there were multiple generations in the house,” from longtime listeners to teenagers. He added that the mix was “really refreshing,” with fans “singing to the new ones and the old ones.” For Dulli, that kind of connection comes from trust: “When you’re in a… cult band, it’s because you’ve sustained an audience who trust what you’re going to do and go with you and let you play your new stuff.”

The session also looks toward the band’s new chapter. The Afghan Whigs recently announced their upcoming album Soft Control, due August 21, 2026 via Royal Cream/BMG.
